Genealogy - "My Family Tree"

This course provides a general introduction to genealogy and family research with advice and tips and traps in locating family information.

You will learn to use the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) genealogy Personal Ancestral File 5.2 (PAF) program. You will be required to have a copy of this program, (bought through your tutor at a nominal sum) to load onto your computer; or it may be downloaded free from the Internet.

During the course, you will also use spreadsheet and word processing programs and practice Internet searches as you learn to explore the best ways to use some of the many sources of family history information available today.

Using the PAF Program, you will learn to:

  • Enter an individual's basic details - names, birth, marriage, death
  • Add parents, siblings, children
  • Expand details - places and events, add notes
  • Display and print reports - family trees, family groups, descendant and ancestor charts, books and much more
  • Enhance and add photos and copy text from other programs
  • Back up your precious files to floppy disk or CD

Prerequisites: Students should have completed the Introduction to Computing Course and should have basic word processing skills and be familiar with basic file operations.
