Image Enhancement
The Image Enhancement Course presents special
methods of enhancing scanned or digital photos, as well as
creating artistic images and special effects digitally. A free
imaging program called GIMP will be used and a copy will be
provided on CD for installation on your own computer.
Subjects covered will include:
- Correcting excess contrast
- Sharpening soft, off focus images
- Removing wrinkles and pigments from faces
- Making dull photos come alive
- Creating images with special effects
- Repairing damaged photos
- Testing and correcting screen and printer
variations
- Use and misuse of image files
- Converting images for Emailing
- Setting screen Gamma for best colour
quality
Gimp version 2.2.3 will be used (unless a
later version becomes available). Being a free "Open Source", we
are able to provide you with a copy without any legal
liabilities. It is a very comprehensive program with similar
functions to Photoshop. If you are currently using other
programs such as Ulead Express, Picture Window Pro, etc, you
will find you can readily adapt a number of the functions
covered in this course.
The programs provided on the CD will be:
- Gimp 2.2.3, GTK 2.4 (required by Gimp),
Gimp Help User Manual
- Installation instructions for GIMP
- QuickGamma, a program to automatically
set the Gamma on your screen,
- A4 Color Test Image to assist in
calibrating the screen and printer
- A number of sample images upon which to
practice
Prerequisites: A fair level of scanning and
digital photography knowledge (preferably from our courses),
familiarity with files, folders and general computer skills.
