Searching the World Wide Web

  •   Review the role of the "Learn the Net" website

  • Demonstrate placing Learn the Net on the desktop

  •  Sessions are designed to be "hands-on"

  • Practical examples used in sessions are designed to enable members to do their own searching

  • Review merits of various search engines and their uses. Particular attention is paid to Google and Yahoo

  • Internet Explorer - how it works and how to set a home page

  • Directory search versus ordinary search engine - do examples

  • Use favourites

  • Do a range of searches to demonstrate finding results for major topics, obscure topics, people, places etc.

  • Deal with  wide range of techniques to find search results quickly and effectively, including how to phrase your search

  • Images, Groups, Google items listed under "MORE”

  • Google Scholar. A new facility to search for academic scientific and technical reports

  •  Desktop Search. A remarkable facility to search your whole computer including deleted items

  • Google Earth (satellite images) and Google Maps

  • Google Site Map

  • Specialised searches like Infobel and Travelmate

  • How to find free software on the internet, and how to download and install it on your computer. Decompressing files

Students must be connected to the Internet,
or be willing to be connected.

Prerequisites: Students should have completed the Introduction to Computing or Basic Courses, and have sufficient word processing and file operation skills.
